New Honor Notebook Features FPC Biometric Sensor

October 12, 2021

New Honor Notebook Features FPC Biometric Sensor

Fingerprint Cards is celebrating another win in the PC space, announcing that one of its fingerprint sensor solutions has been integrated into the Honor MagicBook V14.

The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the notebook’s power button, enabling biometric authentication of a registered user at the moment the user turns on the device. In promoting its new notebook, Honor emphasized the fingerprint sensor’s speed, saying it could enable device unlock in 0.7 seconds.

For FPC, the integration represents the latest important win for the company in a key area of focus. While Fingerprint Cards made its name in the mobile biometrics space and remains a leading provider of fingerprint sensors for smartphone devices, in recent years the company has sought to expand its reach into new areas including PCs as well as biometric payment cards.

Commenting in a statement, Fingerprints VP Ted Hansson said the Honor integration “demonstrates the positive trend in demand for biometric authentication in consumer and enterprise PCs,” and indicated that the FPC team expects this trend to continue.

“Microsoft’s recent decision to allow all their users to completely remove the password from their accounts, in favor of using biometric authentication and authenticator apps, will most likely further accelerate this trend,” he said. “Fingerprints is poised for continued growth in this segment, providing the perfect way to add convenient and secure authentication to PCs.”

FPC also saw its fingerprint biometrics technology integrated into Dell’s Latitude 5000 and Latitude 7000 laptops earlier this year. As for Honor, the Chinese brand has worked with Fingerprints before, having integrated the latter’s sensors into mobile devices including 2019’s Honor 20 Lite.

In announcing the Honor MagicBook V14 integration, FPC predicted that the share of PCs with fingerprint sensors “is expected to increase significantly from today’s relatively low levels,” adding that Fingerprints has seen design wins with three of the world’s top five PC makers. On that note, FPC’s team expect to announce more PC integrations “in the near future”, the announcement concluded.
