New Dell Video Conferencing Monitors Support Facial Recognition

New Dell Video Conferencing Monitors Support Facial Recognition

Biometric technology continues to find its way into more consumer PC devices, with Dell retaining its status as a pioneer in this effort through a new set of monitors.

Debuted during this year’s virtual Consumer Electronics Show, the new monitors are designed specifically for video conferencing, and featured embedded support for Microsoft Teams. They’re available in 24″, 27″, and 34″ sizes, with the latter featuring a curved screen, and they feature infrared cameras that are compatible with Windows Hello’s facial recognition system.

Dell has been an enthusiastic early adopter of Microsoft’s biometric security since the Windows Hello authentication platform made its debut several years ago. Windows Hello supports biometric authentication based on both fingerprint and facial recognition, but requires specialized hardware in the form of fingerprint sensors and infrared cameras.

Dell’s inclusion of IR cameras in multiple computer devices has helped those offerings to stand out as biometric authentication has become more mainstream. Selfie-based authentication in particular has seen a spike in prominence since Apple made it the default authentication mechanism for its iPhones in 2018.

These latest Dell monitors, clearly aimed at meeting the pandemic’s demand for increased video conferencing, could help to further popularize this kind of biometric technology. They’re slated to launch in the US on February 16, and will retail for $520, $720, or $1,150 based on the monitor’s size.
