AI Innovator Moqi Launches Contactless Biometric Scanners, Meeting Demand for Post-Pandemic Identity Solutions

June 29, 2022

(The following press release was submitted by Moqi)

Moqi, an innovative AI company and a leading provider of cutting-edge biometric enrollment and authentication technologies, has launched a new suite of solutions designed to enable contactless scanning at a time of heightened concern about the spread of COVID-19 and other pathogens. The solutions were debuted at this year’s Milipol Asia-Pacific event in Singapore.

The demand for touchless solutions is skyrocketing after the pandemic. According to a report from Mordor Intelligence, the contactless biometrics market is soaring to 23.85 USD billion, with a CAGR of 16.17 percent.

Among all the contactless solutions, facial recognition has been commonly used since Apple launched Face ID for iPhone. However, solutions based on face biometrics struggle to identify individuals wearing protective masks while at the same time raising concerns about privacy and data protection.

MOQI A1 Pro contactless fingerprint scanners and MOQI M1 PalmPass palm biometrics terminals provide contactless solutions. They can avoid accidental or surreptitious recognition, as every acquisition or recognition is completed with the user’s permission, since the user must present their hand for a biometric scan. Moreover, the biometrics features in hands are more universal and suitable for more cases. For example, in the scenario of access control, the MOQI M1 PalmPass solution is suitable for all user groups, regardless of their skin colors, heights, or changes in makeup, accessories, masks, or hairstyles.

Founded in 2016 with a mission to uncover the fundamental principles of artificial intelligence and change the world through innovation, Moqi has developed sophisticated biometric and identity solutions to serve a wide range of sectors and use cases.

Revolutionary Contactless Fingerprint Scanners: MOQI A1 Pro

AI Innovator Moqi Launches Contactless Biometric Scanners, Meeting Demand for Post-Pandemic Identity Solutions
MOQI A1 Pro, showcased at Milipol Asia-Pacific.

MOQI A1 Contactless Fingerprint Scanner Pro (MOQI A1 Pro) is a contactless livescan solution that can capture 10 high-definition fingerprints within a span of 120 seconds, with scanning unaffected by dry, wet, or rough fingers, which are difficult for traditional contact-based scanners. As a product for public security, it can be used in law enforcement, border control, and other safety-enhancing applications.

With just one simple contactless finger scan, MOQI A1 Pro can generate both high-quality rolled and flat fingerprints. The contactless technology also has the advantages of a 20-70 percent larger capture area and higher NFIQ2 image quality scores than contact fingerprint scanners.

The key to the process is its structured lighting system, the product of a rigorous, 18-month testing process. Together with an industrial grade ultra-high resolution metal lens and a 1/1.8” image sensor, the system produces a highly detailed and accurate fingerprint image with no need for physical contact. Moqi’s deep learning-driven surface reconstruction algorithm then turns the image into a 3D model of the finger’s surface, down to sub-millimeter accuracy.

Once a scan is complete, the MOQI A1 Pro can output all ten fingerprints in a 640 x 640 pixel format. The scans produce 500DPI ± 1 percent image resolution, with image distortion under 1 percent.

Testing using the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Fingerprint Image Quality 2 (NFIQ2) has found the quality of Moqi’s plain fingerprint scans to be 1.1 times higher than those of traditional scanners, while its rolled fingerprint scans score 1.2 times higher.

The end result: users’ fingerprints are captured quickly and automatically, with highly accurate fingerprint scans through a convenient and hygienic contactless process, with high consistency even for repeated acquisition attempts. Once captured, these highly accurate images can then be compared against subsequent scans or an existing database.

All of this is delivered through a sturdy piece of hardware featuring an easy-to-use interface. MOQI A1 Pro has a sleek, black matte form factor, and offers IP64-rated water and dust resistance with the capability of operating in temperatures ranging from 0-50°C. It features built-in stereo speakers and status LEDs to help guide the user through the scanning process, and it features a USB 2.0 port for communications with external devices.

“We founded Moqi with the intention to accelerate the pace of innovation in AI technology, focusing on biometric and identity solutions that can serve a wide range of applications and sectors,” said Dr. Linpeng Tang, co-founder and CTO of Moqi. “MOQI A1 Pro is our most advanced fingerprint scanning solution to date. And at a time of heightened concern about the spread of contagions, its contactless functionality is more important than ever.”

Contactless Palmprint and Palm Vein Recognition Access Control Terminal: MOQI M1 PalmPass

MOQI M! PalmPass ,showcased at Milipol Asia-Pacific.

In addition to MOQI A1 Pro, Milipol visitors showed strong interest in MOQI M1 PalmPass, a contactless palm biometrics device that can authenticate an individual with just a show of the hand. Operating through an elegant, user-friendly hardware terminal, MOQI M1 PalmPass can match a registered user against a local database of up to 20,000 records within 0.35 seconds and with no need for physical contact.

Not only is MOQI M1 PalmPass hygienic and fast, it is also highly accurate and secure, with a False Acceptance Rate under 0.01 percent. Liveness detection is supported through the real-time detection of blood flow in the user’s palm, ensuring that the authentication system cannot be tricked through the use of a printed image or synthetic artefact.

Furthermore, the solution keeps users’ biometric templates stored on the device using sophisticated encryption, which ensures that privacy is protected. Meanwhile, a cloud-based device management platform allows administrators to control permissions and view authentication and alarm records, among other actions.

MOQI M1 PalmPass offers an extremely convenient user experience, requiring authorized individuals only to show their palm in order to grant access. It also supports integration with other authentication factors including NFC cards, QR codes, and PINs for scenarios requiring heightened security.

MOQI M1 PalmPass can serve a number of potential use cases in the enterprise and commercial sectors, offering unique identity and authentication benefits in application areas including:

  • Smart Building Access
  • Industrial Parks
  • Campuses
  • Financial Institutions

Other Next-Generation Biometrics Products

AI Innovator Moqi Launches Contactless Biometric Scanners, Meeting Demand for Post-Pandemic Identity Solutions
MOQI FingerID Snap and MOQI FingerSnap, showcased at Milipol Asia-Pacific.

In addition to the MOQI A1 Pro and MOQI M1 PalmPass, Moqi showcased a number of other groundbreaking biometric identity solutions at Milipol Asia-Pacific, including:

MOQI K1: A cost-effective alternative to the A1 Pro. MOQI K1 is a contactless, 3D fingerprint scanner for single-print acquisitions, with a faster scanning speed and lower price. It can be used in a wider range of areas including government affairs, social security, finance, banking, and education, among others.

MOQI FingerID: MOQI FingerID Automated Fingerprint/Palmprint Identification System (AFIS) is an automated feature extraction system for fingerprints and palmprints, with no need to manually mark fingerprint minutiae features while achieving high accuracy.

As the demand for biometric data storage rises, the accuracy of traditional AFIS suffers with the problem of accuracy decay. Additionally, the traditional manual annotation of details is very dependent on the skill level of print examiners. Different annotations will return diverse candidates, and incorrect annotations will even return unsuitable candidates.

MOQI FingerID can overcome these problems. This is achieved through innovative breakthroughs in AI algorithms and systems, like self-learning and multi-scale expression of the visual signal. It makes the Moqi FingerID highly precise, fully automatic, and ultra-fast in fingerprint matching. Furthermore, its lights-out technology effectively reduces the time and cost of manual annotation.

Besides its revolutionary performance and accuracy at a large scale, the system provides a SaaS model that is easy to use and releases the user from heavy maintenance work. It can be applied in areas such as law enforcement, national ID, immigration, and more.

MOQI FingerID Snap: A mobile app and SDK enabling rapid and accurate fingerprint/palmprint recognition in the field, using only a standard smartphone camera. Moqi FingerID Snap is affiliated to the MOQI FingerID AFIS. The app can generate a 500 PPI fingerprint or palmprint and perform a match in less than a minute, thanks to Moqi’s proprietary AI algorithms. The intelligent process has transformed the working process for fingerprint/palmprint match from several days to seconds.

MOQI FingerSnap: A mobile app and SDK designed for four-finger slap prints, and offering an accuracy rate reaching 99.3 percent. Different from MOQI FingerID Snap, it is interoperable with systems beyond MOQI FingerID AFIS, and can remotely compare documents, texts, and facial biometrics. MOQI FingerSnap can fulfill the identification demands of a wide range of areas, including security patrols, bank services, spot checks, background checks, and more.

Together with the flagship MOQI A1 Pro and MOQI M1 PalmPass, these solutions proved to be highly appealing to the discerning and security-focused attendees of Milipol Asia-Pacific. To learn more about how your organization can discover their advantages firsthand, reach out to Moqi.
