Machine Learning Algorithms Make In-Display Sensor Faster Over Time: OnePlus

Machine Learning Algorithms Make In-Display Sensor Faster Over Time: OnePlus

OnePlus continues to put the in-display fingerprint sensor of its latest flagship smartphone in the spotlight, asserting in a new blog post that the system will get faster with use.

The company says that its Screen Unlock system’s algorithms are designed to learn more fingerprint data as a registered user continues to unlock their device, essentially filling in additional details beyond the initial biometric data recorded when the user first register’s their fingerprint. The algorithms will also consider contextual data, such as when the user’s finger is wet or has a cut, in order to speed up recognition time going forward.

The claims offer a counterargument to initial reviews of the OnePlus 6T noting that the in-display fingerprint sensor, while technologically impressive, was a bit slower than the standard fingerprint sensors usually placed in smartphone home buttons. And they’re a further testament to Goodix, the China-based biometrics specialist that has emerged in recent months as perhaps the leading supplier of in-display fingerprint sensor technology.

OnePlus’s continuing positioning of its in-display sensor technology – and now its detailing of how the system improves over time – could help to add further momentum to the technology, which only started to emerge in commercial smartphones this year and is one of the most exciting biometric modalities of the year.
