Galaxy S10 to Sport Qualcomm In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, says Supplier

September 12, 2018

Galaxy S10 to Sport Qualcomm In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, says SupplierSamsung is planning to incorporate in-display fingerprint sensor technology from Qualcomm into its next flagship smartphone, the hotly anticipated Galaxy S10, according to a new report.

The news reportedly comes directly from a supplier, Taiwan-based General Interface Solutions. According to Korea’s ETNews, GIS is working with Qualcomm to adapt the latter’s ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor technology for the Galaxy S10, which is expected to launch early next year. This will be a third-generation version of the in-display technology first announced by Qualcomm last autumn.

If true, the news represents a big win for Qualcomm in the growing in-display fingerprint sensor market. Despite being one of the first sensor makers to have announced a viable in-display solution, the company has yet to win a top tier smartphone integration of the technology. ETNews notes only China-based smartphone maker B-Boo as a client that has integrated Qualcomm’s technology into a commercial device.

Of course, there have been rumors of in-display fingerprint sensor technology for the last few Samsung devices, none of which have thus far delivered. But with a growing number of rivals using this technology to make their devices stand out in the mobile market, and Apple already having established itself as the pioneer of sophisticated mobile facial recognition, Samsung may finally be ready to embrace in-display fingerprint scanning as a key to staying competitive.
