IDEX Sensor Integrated Into Biometric Remote Control

September 13, 2018

IDEX Sensor Integrated Into Biometric Remote ControlIDEX has announced a novel integration of its fingerprint sensor technology: Korea-based Ohsung Electronics has used it to bring fingerprint scanning to one of its remote control solutions, the product of a collaboration with TW Electronics, a UK-based remote control specialist that offers tailored remote solutions to other device makers such as TV brands.

In announcing the integration, IDEX did not indicate specific applications for the fingerprint scanning remote, explaining only that it “will enhance user value by allowing a friendly way to authenticate the user.” The company also indicated that TW Electronics will showcase the solution at IBC2018, an industry trade show focused on media and entertainment technology.

The integration is something of a departure from IDEX’s main area of focus, biometric cards. Biometric payment cards in particular have been emerging in recent months as a major new market area for fingerprint sensor specialists, and IDEX has taken measures to ensure that it’s well-positioned to meet these opportunities. Accordingly, in its statement announcing the Ohsung Electronics collaboration, IDEX reaffirmed that this area remains its “core focus”. “However, products developed for the biometric smart card space are highly relevant for other market verticals, including the IOT space, and IDEX will entertain attractive opportunities outside the smart card space,” the company explained.
