ID R&D is expanding the concept of liveness detection with a new solution that extends liveness coverage from faces to identity documents. IDLive Doc leverages the same algorithms in ID R&D’s IDLive Face offering, and can determine whether or not a physical document is present in the same way that IDLive Face can guarantee a face during the remote onboarding process.
In that regard, ID R&D argues that IDLive Doc can help shore up a gap in current onboarding workflows. Many companies offer liveness detection technology that can guarantee that a person took their own selfie, and many more can use facial recognition to match a selfie to a photo ID. However, it is more difficult to confirm the presence of the document itself, especially since modern hi-resolution screens can trick the naked eye when that screen has been filtered through a photo. That means that a fraudster could use a picture of a legitimate document to commit an attack, even if they do not have access to the actual document itself.
IDLive Doc can thwart those screen replay attacks. The solution runs passively in the background, and can automatically evaluate liveness based on only a single frame. IDLive Doc can be integrated into an existing onboarding platform in a matter of hours, and is currently available to interested customers in beta form.
“We are excited to be the first to market with this critical fraud-fighting technology,” said ID R&D CEO Alexey Khitrov. “Answering the request from multiple customers to help solve the problem of document screen replay attacks was a challenge we were uniquely positioned to tackle and we now have a product that quickly addresses the issue without friction.”
While IDLive Doc is being pitched as the first dedicated document liveness detector to hit the market, other companies are starting to explore the technology. Most notably, iProov is trying to curb the spread of misinformation with a new solution designed to be able to spot altered and manipulated documents online. IDLive Face boasts iBeta level 2 certification, and was cited as a motivating factor in Mitek’s recent acquisition of ID R&D.
