Apple Pay – the mobile wallet from Apple that leverages fingerprint biometrics – launched in the United Kingdom this week while the vice president of Alipay predicted the death of passwords in mCommerce during Mobile World Congress Shanghai. A new report firm Acuity Market Intelligence positioned mobile biometric technology, like that which is used in the above two solutions, will bring about disruptive change in the global mCommerce market.

The Department of Homeland Security began testing the long awaited biometric exit initiative in airports last week while we reported that ImageWare Systems sealed a new deal with Lockheed Martin that will see its Biometric Engine integrated with the later’s Identity as a Service platform. Internationally, NEC’s facial recognition technology has been selected to secure 14 airports in Brazil and biometric ID cards are coming to the Economic Community of West African States.

Controversy defined the education news this week stateside as we reported that a San Diego school district canned its mobile biometric student login initiative. Overseas the news was contrasting, with biometric attendance for teachers and students slated to bring biometric efficiency to schools in Andhra Pradesh.

The FIDO Alliance was in the news last week, having welcomed Egis to its board of directors. The fingerprint company has been a long standing member of the Alliance and was showcasing its FIDO Certified technology at the MWC Shanghai conference last week as well.
A new patent describing vascular recognition for a smartwatch was filed by Apple and a new report singled the company out, along with rival Samsung, for driving the fingerprint sensor market. Meanwhile we learned that Dashlane now supports Samsung’s fingerprint biometrics and that the Chinese fingerprint sensor market is heating up in terms of competition.
