Aware Puts Biometrics in the Driver’s Seat in New Automotive White Paper

December 9, 2019

“It’s a compelling case for bringing biometrics into the car, and given Aware’s expertise in the world of biometric authentication, it’s coming from an expert source.”

As today’s cars get increasingly sophisticated on the technological and IT front, Aware Inc. wants to put biometric technology in the driver’s seat. The company has published a new White Paper detailing the many ways that biometrics can be used to enhance driver safety and the user experience behind the wheel.

Entitled “Biometrics on the Road to Automotive Identity“, the paper starts out with a roadmap of just how new digital technologies like 5G connectivity, vehicular sensors, IoT communications, and AI are dramatically altering the traditional vehicle concept. In this context, there’s a growing opportunity to leverage sophisticated technology for driver identification – and this is even becoming an important security need, with examples already emerging of hackers remotely hijacking connected car functions. This, of course, is where biometrics can play an important role, helping to verify that an authorized driver is entering a vehicle, and even personalizing various settings for that driver.

From there, the paper goes on to consider some of the commercial use cases of biometric technology across the automotive industry. This includes things like driver authentication for car sharing, rentals, taxi services, and even trucking. And finally, the White Paper lays out how biometrics can be used to increase safety in connected vehicles through technologies like voice interaction and using eye tracking and face biometrics to monitor drivers for signs of fatigue.

It’s a compelling case for bringing biometrics into the car, and given Aware’s expertise in the world of biometric authentication, it’s coming from an expert source. As the connected car industry continues to rev up, it’s a good time to consider the biometric opportunities laid out in “Biometrics on the Road to Automotive Identity”.
