New ATM Uses Mobile Facial Recognition For Authentication

June 12, 2017

“The companies are showing off the new system at this week’s Digital Banking conference in Texas, and will perform a real world pilot in collaboration with Banco Popular de Puerto Rico this summer. “

Samsung SDS America and Diebold Nixdorf are getting ready to roll out a new ATM that lets customers withdraw money using only their mobile devices, and incorporates facial recognition for authentication.New ATM Uses Mobile Facial Recognition For Authentication

The solution essentially replaces the ATM interface with a mobile app, allowing customers to arrange a withdrawal via an NFC-enabled smartphone. When a customer then approaches the ATM, all she has to do is tap her phone on an NFC reader built into the ATM, which will then prompt the the user to perform a facial scan using her smartphone’s camera in order to complete the transaction and withdraw the cash.

The system can operate with both Android and iOS devices, and in a statement announcing it Diebold Nixdorf and Samsung asserted that transactions are “complete in less than half the time of a standard ATM transaction.”

The companies are showing off the new system at this week’s Digital Banking conference in Texas, and will perform a real world pilot in collaboration with Banco Popular de Puerto Rico this summer. While Diebold Nixdorf has been keen to explore biometric technology for ATMs in other configurations, this appears to be its first to add the use of a mobile user interface.
