News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017

February 20, 2017

Last week at FindBiometrics our Healthcare Biometrics Month coverage continued as we prepared for this week’s HIMSS conference in Orlando, Florida. The industry news was filled with big contactless modality news too, while we saw innovations in IoT ID and biometric border control.

Here’s a look back on all of last week’s top stories in global identity management:

Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017

News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017As Healthcare Biometrics Month entered its third week we turned our featured focus to the topic of medical identity theft and how strong authentication technology is helping in the fight against health fraud. We also published an interview with ImageWare Systems’ director of Mobile Business Development, Tom Evangelisti, whixh goes in depth on the topic of healthcare biometrics. ImageWare is at this week’s’ HIMSS conference, an event that has been getting increasingly biometrics-focused over the years. Last week we also got a preview of what to expect at that exhibition from BIO-key’s healthcare partners, while a patient ID deployment and Safran’s new French health card contract rounded out the healthcare headlines.

Check out all the healthcare biometrics content from the week that was:

Big News Out of RSA

News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017Big biometrics news emerged from last week’s RSA conference as Nuance Communications and BioCatch entered a partnership that will bring the latter’s behavioral biometrics tech to the former’s security suite. Veridium was at RSA too, launching its latest solution, VeridiumAD, while Crossmatch used the event as a platform to announce that its DigitalPersona Composite Authentication solution is now certified for Citrix compatibility.

IoT and ID

News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017Fujitsu announced a new solution that brings mobile biometrics to the world of IoT last week as we looked into the possibility that biometrics could prevent digital connected car theft. Meanwhile, MIT researchers announced the results of their ongoing efforts in the area of low-power speech recognition—a technology with a wide range of Internet of Things applications.

Fingerprint Biometrics

News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017Fingerprint Cards and Precise Biometrics technology is behind the authentication features on the new Redmi Note 4X smartphone from Xiaomi, we reported last week. FPC also announced its plans for the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which will once agian showcase biometric innovation. In the meantime, IDEX partnered with a new distributor while announcing the completion of its new ASIC for off-chip sensors, and a new Apple patent further stoked speculation on the future of iPhone biometrics.

The Markets

News Roundup: Healthcare Biometrics Month & HIMSS 2017A new report from Grand View Research is painting a positive picture of the biometrics industry circa 2025. Looking to the present, it’s easy to see the foundation of the predicted growth, with FIDO Alliance underlining the increasing popularity of strong authentication in the new showcase area of its website. Despite that positive long term forecast, however, Precise Biometrics offered insight into some challenges facing the mobile fingerprint sensor market last week when it released its year-end 2016 fiscal results.
