An HID Global executive is taking on a prominent position with the Security Industry Association: SIA has announced that HID Global Government Affairs VP Kathleen Carroll will head the SIA Data Privacy Advisory Board.
The new SIA arm was first announced this past January, and is aimed at developing policy guidelines for the protection of sensitive personal data.
Commenting on her appointment as its chair, Carroll asserted that she has “been working on the forefront of privacy considerations in the security industry at HID Global for more than a decade”. Carroll has also headed SIA’s Government Relations Committee since 2012; the role will now be filled by Johnson Controls Inc. Federal Government Relations Director Craig Sharman.
The changes come at a time when privacy is a matter of rising concern, perhaps especially as private companies and government agencies alike increasingly leverage individuals’ biometric data – fingerprints on smartphones and faces at airport screening, to name a couple of prominent examples – for authentication and identification purposes. Carroll’s background at HID Global should help to ensure she brings particular expertise to the table, given the company’s extensive work in biometric sensor technology, among other areas.
