BioConnect is highlighting how biometric technology can reduce time theft in the workplace.
As the company’s Claire Scholz explains in a blog post, “time theft” is what happens when employees inaccurately record their hours worked, either through “buddy punching” in which a colleague clocks in and out on the employee’s behalf—with a smart card, for example—or by inaccurately filling out time sheets. Scholz cites Nucleus Research data indicating that buddy punching alone occurs in 74 percent of American workplaces, and adds up to an average of 2.2 percent of gross payroll.
Biometric time clocks offer a unique solution. By attaching work attendance directly to an employee’s body—through fingerprint scanning, for example—they ensure that employees are where they’re supposed to be during working hours. They can also help to cut costs: Scholz asserts that the average business loses four percent of its payroll to clerical errors, and of course such mistakes are less likely to occur with digital, biometric systems. And such systems can also enable greater administrative efficiency by automating many processes, and can more easily offer historical data that can help administrators analyze workforce trends and thereby come up with strategies to improve efficiency and so on.
Biometric attendance tracking solutions are increasingly popular around the world, from complex industrial deployments to government implementations enabling greater accountability in the public service; and of course BioConnect’s eponymous platform is well-suited for the task, too.
