Enterprise App-Based Identity and Access Management to Skyrocket: Report

February 7, 2019

“…it’s cheaper and more convenient to license an authentication app than it is to build a custom biometric security system for the office.”

Enterprise App-Based Identity and Access Management to Skyrocket: Report

In 2018, fewer than five percent of organizations used smartphones apps for identity and access management. That number is likely to skyrocket in the next few years: Gartner analysts are now predicting that 70 percent of organizations will implement such systems by the year 2022.

The trend will allow employees to use their phones to verify their identities and access work materials, and will take place largely because it’s cheaper and more convenient to license an authentication app than it is to build a custom biometric security system for the office.

“Biometric authentication uses biological or behavioral traits unique to each person and offers better accountability than other common methods,” said Gartner Research VP Ant Allan.  “Implementing this via smartphone apps provides more consistency and is technically simpler than supporting it directly on a variety of different endpoint devices.”

Gartner expects the transition to smartphone authentication to coincide with a general switch to Software-as-a-Service solutions (like Pramati’s ThumbSignIn) among larger organizations as more companies turn to external solutions providers for services that are not core to their own business.

IAM technology will again take center stage at the 2019 Gartner Identity and Access Management Summit, which will take place March 7th to 8th in London.
