Tygart Technology, a developer of image analysis solutions, has announced a new facial recognition system called MXSERVER. The cloud-based system is capable of quickly analyzing huge amounts of video and photo data.
It’s designed for security applications, particularly in the area of law enforcement. Because it can quickly analyze large amount of data from multiple media collections, MXSERVER could prove very useful in identifying targets through multiple surveillance video feeds, for example; or it could be used to identify security risks in real-time crowd surveillance.
Speaking in a press release, Tygart President John F. Waugaman underlined the utility of this kind of technology for such applications, noting that government security organizations “tasked with the mission of public safety and national defense are confronted with shrinking budgets that limit the resources available for manual forensic video and photo analysis,” and adding that Tygart’s “timesaving video analytics technology enables agencies to search thousands of hours of video footage and millions of photographs housed in big data collections in just minutes.”
Governments have long been interested in the security applications of biometric technology, and a system like MXSERVER undoubtedly has great appeal. As video technology is further integrated into policing, this kind of technology could prove to have even greater utility, though that would also undoubtedly lead to greater scrutiny from advocates of privacy and civil rights concerns.
