Omnicell, a technological automation company specializing in medication management, has teamed up with a medication safety solutions provider to deliver a new system that can help reduce errors in the operating room. The system will integrate technology from its new partner, Codonics, into the Omnicell Anesthesia Workstation.
That technology is the Codonics Safe Label System (or SLS), an FDA class 2 device. Together with the Omnicell Anesthesia Workstation, the system scans barcodes to produce audible and visual cues to confirm that the correct medications are being applied. Authorized personnel sign on to the Anesthesia Workstation via biometric identification (with alternative options), and immediately have access to the SLS, letting them scan an ampoule or vial to capture the correct patient charge, record application of the medication, and produce an ISO-, ASTM-, ASA-compliant label featuring a wealth of information about the medication in question. In addition to helping cut down on errors in the application of medication, the automated system is also effective in helping to better manage inventory control, as these records are updated as the medication is applied.
Healthcare providers are increasingly turning to these kinds of digital, automated solutions to improve efficiency and outcomes, with hi-tech narcotics control systems playing an important role. And Omnicell has been very involved in this sector with its other endeavours, having provided medication management systems to major hospital systems in the US market. With its Codonics partnership, a number of new avenues in the healthcare market should open up as the company expands its presence.
