InFocus’ Iris Scanning Smartphone Gets Approval for Aadhaar

Oregon-based InFocus is preparing to launch an iris-scanning smartphone compatible with India’s Aadhaar biometric national ID program.

InFocus' Iris Scanning Smartphone Gets Approval for AadhaarThe as yet unnamed smartphone has just received certification from India’s Standardization Testing & Quality Certification (STQC) authority confirming its use for Aadhaar, the biggest and most ambitious biometric national ID program in the world. With Aadhaar used for a range of civic activities including ATM banking and even airport security screening, the STQC certification could represent a major market opportunity for InFocus.

Moreover, the company claims that the STQC testing confirmed that its device’s iris scanning achieved a false rejection rate (FRR) of “virtually zero”, a claim that could help to establish the company among pioneers of mobile iris biometrics.

The smartphone is reportedly 4G compatible, and features a 4.5″ FWVGA display, a 1.5GHz processor, and one GB of RAM. A launch date has not yet been announced.
