A new app for Apple’s three different operating systems launched early last month that aims to help users protect the photos and videos they consider especially private behind a layer of encryption and biometric authentication so they remain safe from prying eyes, even if the device they are stored on is hacked or stolen.
Trustful — launched in November by iOS app developer Maulik Sutariya — is touted as the ultimate privacy tool, aimed at ensuring that the user is the only person who will ever have access to the files they want protected, their data, and the password or biometric information used to secure them.
“Trustful does not collect any kind of data, absolutely none,” reads the App website. “No use of third party SDK’s or frameworks to ensure maximum privacy. There are no ads or analytics in the App. Your data is yours & only yours. No one in this world can see or access your photos or videos stored in the Trustful app (locally or in the cloud).”
Users can hide the files of their choice behind either biometric authentication — so Face ID or Touch ID — or a master password that only they will ever have access to. To further ensure privacy, Trustful also has foregone any third-party SDKs or frameworks, to ensure that users’ data is never accessible to any unknown characters. Finally, every photo and video that users secure behind Trustful in encrypted locally (meaning on their device), using a secret key and master password.
“Photos & videos always exist in an encrypted form, they are decrypted live only when you open & unlock the app,” the App site explains. “As soon as the app goes to background or is closed, no data can be accessed locally since everything is always in encrypted form. Every photo & video that Is synced to iCloud is always in encrypted form.”
The app supports essentially every type of format that users could create on their iPhone, including JPG, PNG, HEIC, Live Photo, GIF, TIFF, MOV, HEIF, and MP4.
Trustful is free to download (with in-app purchases) from the App Store.
