NHS Mobile Login Now Features iProov Biometric Authentication for iOS and Android

May 22, 2020

Biometric facial authentication technology company iProov has announced that England’s National Health Services (NHS) is using its technology to verify users when signing up for the NHS login using both the NHS Android and iOS apps.

NHS Mobile Login Now Features iProov Biometric Authentication for iOS and Android

The new biometric authentication capabilities enable users in England to create an NHS login remotely by uploading a valid piece of government photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s license. Once this is done, the user will then receive a prompt asking them to position their face within a designated area on their screen, which allows iProov’s Flashmark facial verification technology to verify the user’s identity.

“The NHS login service is now a proven, secure, inclusive and effective way for citizens to verify and use their identity for health-related purposes,” said iProov founder and CEO Andrew Bud. “We have been very impressed by what the NHS Digital team has accomplished, by their agility and professionalism, and by the boldness of their vision.”

Flashmark ensures that the individual attempting authentication is a real person (and not a spoofing attempt), the correct person (and not a false positive), and that they are actually authentication themselves in real time (liveness detection) to protect the user from the risk of identity theft.

Once authentication has been confirmed and the user has been matched to their medical record, they can access all of the information and services available via the NHS app such as ordering repeat prescriptions and making GP appointments.

The new authentication solution has the ability to process a larger capacity of users, which may prove to be a major benefit due to an unprecedented increase in demand for remote NHS services stemming from the COVID-19 outbreak which has forced many people all over the world to stay home in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the virus.

“Over the past couple of months we have seen a surge in demand in people registering for an NHS login as they look to manage their health digitally,” said Melissa Ruscoe, Programme Head for NHL login. “More automated tools like this will help us to improve the experience of our users, increase demand capacity and ensure nobody is waiting too long to complete identity verification checks to gain access to their digital healthcare services.”

The availability of biometric authentication for the NHS app on iOS comes following an initial launch in which the feature was only available on Android.
