New Garmin Smartwatch Can Stream Biometric Data During E-sports Competition

October 22, 2020

Garmin has released a new smartwatch designed specifically for e-Sports competitors. The Garmin Instinct Esports Edition is a modified version of the Garmin Instinct, with a few extra features that will make the watch more compatible with various e-Sports platforms.

New Garmin Smartwatch Can Stream Biometric Data During E-sports Competition

Of those, the most notable feature is the ability to broadcast player data to an audience in real time. The Garmin Instinct is able to read biometrics like heart rate and stress level, and that information could add an extra level of tension to e-Sports broadcasts. The watch can also analyze that data to help players improve their performance over time.

“With the Instinct Esports Edition, e-Sports athletes can tap into technology to track and examine how their body responds to intense competition,” said Garmin Sales VP Dan Bartel.

The Instinct Esports Edition inherits all of the features of the original Instinct, many of which are still just as useful for everyday fitness enthusiasts as they are for e-Sports players. The watch has sleep monitoring capabilities, and combines those with heart rate and stress data to gauge the wearer’s energy level during training and competition.

The Instinct Esports Edition is now available at a price of $299.99. It comes with 16MB of memory, and boasts a 10 ATM water resistance rating.

Meanwhile, the US military is currently using a Garmin smartwatch in a trial that will try to diagnose COVID-19 using data captured with wearable devices. In the past, Garmin has targeted music enthusiasts with the release of the Vivoactive 3 Music smartwatch back in 2018.
