In a move that shows the confidence the automotive industry has in the further integration of biometric technology into vehicles, iconic American brand Jeep has revealed that it is exploring a variety of features for future vehicles, including biometric facial recognition.
As a part of parent company Stellantis’ EV Day 2021, Jeep made the announcement that its popular 4xe brand — which includes its flagship Wrangler series of SUVs — will continue to move toward going electric, with the Grand Cherokee 4xe next in the line of Jeeps to do so as it will be a gas/electric hybrid release.
According to a recent report from SlashGear, the Wrangler 4xe (which has been on sale in Europe and US since late 2020), has been a success with all orders for the remainder of 2021 having already been filled.
With its eyes to the future, Jeep also stated that it expects 70 percent of all of its vehicle sales to be of the electric variety, while also teasing autonomous drones and biometric features for future releases.
The company highlighted the use of biometric facial recognition as a means of both accessing and powering future vehicles, with the increasingly popular tech potentially being integrated into the activation system for the drivetrain.
The market for biometric systems in the automotive industry has been seeing rapid growth in recent years. A September 2020 Market Analyst Report on Automotive Biometrics from Goode Intelligence predicted that the revenue for biometrics in the industry will rise to $560 million by the year 2026.
This isn’t the first time Jeep has shown confidence in biometric authentication for its vehicles. In 2015, Jeep’s release of that year’s Jeep Wrangler was the first commercially available automobile to incorporate the EyeLock ID iris scanning authentication system.
