BSI’s Biometric Security Tips Emphasize Continuous Authentication

BSI's Biometric Security Tips Emphasize Continuous Authentication

Biometric Signature ID (BSI) has some advice for companies that are looking to implement a biometric security solution. In a post on the company’s blog, BSI Founder and CEO Jeff Maynard argues that behavioral biometrics are a safer and more reliable option than static modalities like fingerprint recognition.

Much of that has to do with the fact that behavioral biometrics can monitor user activity and provide continuous, ongoing authentication after the initial login. Thanks to legislation like the Illinois Biometric Privacy Act (BIPA), there is also a risk of legal liability if physical traits like fingerprints become compromised or are collected without adequate consent.

Many of Maynard’s other tips are relatively straightforward corporate best practices. He provides a list of questions that businesses should ask a security provider before signing the contract. According to Maynard, a good solution should work across multiple applications and devices, deliver a good user experience, comply with industry standards, and be vetted through independent testing. In most cases, it also shouldn’t take more than a few hours to deploy.

Maynard went on to note that many companies selling security solutions are third parties that don’t hold their own patents and therefore may not be able to provide good customer support.

BSI is the developer of the gesture-based BioProof-ID platform, which recently integrated facial recognition for additional security.
