Biometric Cards: Tier 3 Manufacturer Orders FPC’s T-Shape Sensors

January 4, 2021

“Fingerprint sensors for biometric payment cards represent a very large potential market for biometrics, and this order demonstrates the strength of Fingerprints’ solution and our leading position within this growing market.” – Michel Roig, SVP of Payments & Access, Fingerprint Cards

Biometric Cards: Tier 3 Manufacturer Orders FPC's T-Shape Sensors

Fingerprint Cards has received another volume order for its T-Shape fingerprint sensor module for biometric cards.

In announcing the order, FPC declined to name the client concerned, but described it as “a global Top 3 card manufacturer.” The company also noted that the order follows “a couple of initial commercial launches of biometric payment cards” featuring its own fingerprint sensor technology.

The announcement comes after a couple of important developments concerning the T-Shape sensor in November, when Fingerprint Cards announced that it had attained approval from China’s Bank Card Test Center for its T2 – the second generation version of the T-Shape module. The company also announced that the India-based smart card manufacturer M-Tech Innovations had partnered with FPC to start making T-Shape-integrated cards.

The T-Shape is an important and relatively new component of Fingerprint Cards’ portfolio, representing the company’s efforts to become a leading supplier of fingerprint sensors in the emerging biometric payment cards market.

“Fingerprint sensors for biometric payment cards represent a very large potential market for biometrics, and this order demonstrates the strength of Fingerprints’ solution and our leading position within this growing market,” explained FPC’s SVP of Payments & Access, Michel Roig. “Together with our partners, we are enabling banks to remove the payment cap and bring consumers the trust and experience needed for contactless payments.”

In announcing this latest order, the company also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has driven up consumers’ interest in contactless payments, due to the general aversion to touching shared surfaces. Fingerprint sensors add extra security to the kinds of tap-to-pay transactions enabled by modern payment cards.
