Freshman orientation is almost upon the incoming students of Winthrop University in South Carolina, where things are looking up in the area of high-tech biometric identification. When receiving ID cards earlier this summer in June, the bright eyed academics underwent an iris scan procedure for the purpose of a hands free security program that is being tested out during the school’s orientation week.
New Jersey based biometrics company Iris ID will be supplying the EagleEye stations, set to replace easily forged magstripe IDs the school currently uses. According to Patrice Bruneau, director of user support services at Winthrop University, other biometric security possibilities were considered, but the hands-free (and face-free) method offered by iris scanning won out over fingerprint reading options due to concerns about the spreading of germs.
The university’s associate vice president for information technology, James Hammond, claims that Winthrop is one of only two institutions of higher-education in the Southeast to test Iris ID’s solutions.
