June 18, 2013 – As reported by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) of Ghana started a pilot program on Monday to biometrically register new subscribers as well as renewal membership on to the NHIS. The project is set to last a month and is being carried out in the Ayawaso and La districts in the Greater Accra region using the 37 Military and Police Hospitals in Accra. The pilot is limited to a select number of personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces only but if it is successful a national program should follow.
The aim of the pilot is to issue instant membership identity cards while also improving card management, tidying up the database by preventing duplicate records and implementing an effective verification system at the point of healthcare service delivery using the biometric solution.
