Fujitsu has announced a new line of notebooks that offer biometric security capabilities.
They’re called the Lifebook U7x7 notebooks, and are available in three different sizes with displays ranging from 12.5 inches to 15.6 inches. They’re thin and lightweight, and they feature classic and USB type-C compatibility, as well as anti-glare HD or full HD touch displays.
But it’s their security features that help the notebooks to stand out. They come with integrated smart card readers and TPM 2.0 cryptoprocessor support. There’s also an optional palm vein sensor integration designed to help users do away with passwords.
That last feature could indicate a growing trend in consumer electronics, with biometric sensors expanding beyond smartphones, where they are now prevalent, to laptops. Apple is helping to lead this charge by bringing its Touch ID fingerprint scanning system to its new MacBook Pro; and in a statement announcing its new Lifebook U7x7 devices, Fujitsu indicated that they also support fingerprint scanning in addition to palm vein scanning. It isn’t yet clear if the fingerprint sensors come with all the new devices or are optional additions as in the case of the palm vein scanner, but in any case Fujitsu is clearly making some effort to get biometric security into the hands of its customers.
