Florida-based MOSA Technology Solutions has been awarded $750,000-worth of new contracts to provide the FBI with biometric scanning technologies.
The products and solutions are for the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) biometric database system, which is used primarily for law enforcement and regulated background check purposes, and features the world’s largest criminal fingerprint database. MOSA will act as an integrator, sourcing and implementing the technologies requested by the FBI.
The contracts reflect the Bureau’s growing interest biometric data, which has risen alongside major advancements in biometric technologies. The NGI has proven useful in criminal investigations and has also received industry accolades, but has also raised concerns about privacy rights as it has expanded, with the FBI now endeavoring to exempt the program from Privacy Act legislation.
With the new MOSA contracts, the FBI is evidently committed to further expanding NGI’s capabilities. In a statement announcing the contracts, MOSA gave no indication of the timelines for their fulfilment, but CEO Paul Frasca asserted that the contracts were a recognition of the company’s experience in biometrics and “agility in sourcing and implementing the best solution to meet our customer’s needs,” suggesting that the requested solutions will be delivered soon.
