The educational sector of the global biometrics market is poised to see annual growth of 26 percent between 2017 and 2021, according to a new report from Technavio.
Several factors are going to drive this growth. In the APAC region and the GCC countries, biometric technologies are increasingly seen as a part of general infrastructure in education; and similarly in Europe the EU’s Europe 2020 strategy for economic development is helping to promote demand for more sophisticated technological infrastructure. Meanwhile, in North America, it’s security concerns that are helping to push demand, Technavio says; though it may be worth noting here that there have recently been multiple school deployments of biometric cafeteria systems aimed at improving administrative efficiency.
Technavio asserts that the emergence of multimodal biometric systems is also helping to drive demand, with lead education technology researcher Jhansi Mary asserting in a report summary that such systems “will make it difficult for miscreants to access information” that is restricted. This analysis echoes Technavio’s prediction last year that multimodal biometric technologies are likely to “gain widespread acceptance” in the next few years.
Nevertheless, looking to discrete modalities, fingerprint scanning technology will lead the way with 67 percent marketshare, followed by iris and facial recognition technologies.
