The Chief Minister of India’s most populous state is ordering the expansion of biometric attendance tracking in government offices.
During a presentation of the Rural Development Department, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserted that such systems must be implemented throughout government offices down to the level of district subdivisions.
The move follows earlier efforts to bring biometric attendance tracking to government offices at a higher level. It was announced alongside new requirements regarding public postings of government staff and ongoing projects at the village level, suggesting that Adityanath sees the expansion of biometric attendance tracking as a matter of transparency and accountability on the part of the government.
Presumably, the biometric systems will be connected to Aadhaar, the country’s ambitious national biometric ID program. While Aadhaar attendance tracking was adapted into various government applications early on, the program has expanded widely, with a now strong presence in financial services and even emerging applications in airport screening.
