China-based Yitu Technology has won first place in four categories of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT), the company has announced.
The company’s biometric facial recognition software was found to be 95.5 percent accurate — a full two percent higher than the technology of its nearest rival, Russia-based Vocord.
Part of what makes Yitu’s success so significant is the rigor of the FRVT, which uses realistic scenarios based on photo databases from the Department of Homeland Security, suggesting that its success in lab testing will translate to real-world competence. Also important is that Yitu says its technology was “consistent in its performance” in more detailed testing assessing how participants performed with respect to non-white and non-male datasets, an achievement that could help to ameliorate discrimination concerns around government authorities’ increasing use of facial recognition technologies.
Other participants in this round of testing included 3DiVi, Dermalog, Digital Barriers, ITMO University, Neurotechnology, N-Tech Lab, Rank One Computing, Samtech InfoNet Limited, TongYi Transportation Technology, Tupel, VCognition, Vigilant Solutions, and Vision Labs, in addition to Vocord and Yitu.
