Xintec, a Taiwan-based sensor packaging company affiliated with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is going to start fulfilling orders for iris-recognition technology in Q4 of this year, according to new reports. The company is also reportedly preparing to go into mass production of iris recognition chips next year.
The moves point to growing excitement about iris recognition as Samsung brings its Galaxy Note7 to market. It isn’t the first smartphone to feature iris-scanning technology, but it is the most high-profile such device and the technology is still something of a novelty on mobile devices. The Note7 appears to have pushed other OEMs to start exploring the technology more intensively, with HOMTOM having just announced a new smartphone that purportedly uses the same technology.
Apple, of course, can’t be far behind, having previously been a step ahead of Samsung with its pioneering of the mobile fingerprint sensor. The company is rumored to be working on an iris recognition system for an upcoming iPhone device, and the industry watchers keeping an eye on Xintec are reporting that at least some of its new orders for iris recognition sensors are meant for next year’s iPhone, though Xintec refuses to comment on the matter.
