NEXT Biometrics Receives Fingerprint Sensor Order For New Category of Handheld Devices

rp_iStock_Fingerprint-300x225.jpgThis morning, NEXT Biometrics – a publicly listed Norwegian biometrics company – announced that it has received a purchase order from the Taiwanese market that will see it deliver 10,000 area sensors before the end of 2014.

The order was placed by an existing partner which is described as a leader in ‘novel market concepts.’ It requested additional sensors after a long period of testing and product development.  The order of 10,000 area sensors will be implemented in a new category of handheld devices.

NEXT has been in the news frequently this year with partnerships, design wins and other sensor orders. In November, the company notably gave the okay to a new high capacity sensor coating machine that has greatly increased its production capacity.

As reported at the time, thanks to this new machine, from now on it will only cost NEXT 10 cents to coat a sensor, a process that used to run the company over a dollar per unit. The machine will also increase coating capacity, allowing NEXT to coat 1.8 million sensors per month – a vast improvement over 100,000 per month production capacity at which it once sat.

In September, NEXT Biometrics and BIO-key International entered a strategic hardware and software partnership. The agreement will see BIO-key’s fingerprint matching algorithm on NEXT’s low-cost, high performance sensors. In tandem with the partnership, BIO-key placed an order for 75,000 of NEXT’s sensors.
