Interview with Dr. Dae-hoon Kim, Ph.D., CEO/President, IriTech Inc.

During the past 5 years smartphones have increasingly become a part of our lives. So many transactions are made easier through use of a smartphone. But along with the increased convenience, smartphones pose a large security risk. Manufacturers and users are increasingly recognizing that the current security framework is inadequate. A four-digit PIN or a secret finger swipe can be easily hacked. Personal information, including financial or contact information, is jeopardized if the smartphone is compromised. Additionally, data inside the phone can be subject to malicious attacks.

IriTech’s Mobile Security platform mitigates this risk. By making a few minor changes to existing phone hardware, IriTech can turn a smartphone into an iris recognition device. This technology will be especially applicable for mobile payment and cloud services. We are in discussions with several phone manufacturers about incorporating this technology in future products. The increased security provided by our Mobile Security Platform will…

Dubai International Airport Deploys Identity Verification Solution from AOptix

AOptix (, a technology innovation company applying optics to transform identity verification and wireless communications, today announced that in the first phase of deployment AOptix automated iris and face recognition systems will be installed at 100 immigration smart counters and Smart Gates at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3, the world’s largest airport terminal. The systems are being integrated and deployed by Emaratech, a major regional systems integrator for government, border control, aviation security and electronic identification systems.

The AOptix systems will authenticate iris and face images for travelers who enter or leave the UAE through Terminal 3. Last year more than 50 million passengers, including transit passengers, entered/left UAE through Dubai Terminal 3 out of which over 30 million were entry/exit transactions. AOptix systems are expected to dramatically speed passengers through immigration while ensuring the highest level of security. The airport plans to expand this system to all four of its terminals and process some 75 million passengers a year through immigration by 2014.

emaratech selected AOptix for its high throughput, highly accurate, automated identity verification capabilities. “AOptix systems provide cutting-edge identity verification that not only makes travelers safer, but creates a more pleasant, customer-friendly travel experience, which complements emaratech’s secured and efficient border control processes and systems” said Thani Alzaffin, Director General and Board Member, of emaratech. “We will be able to dramatically reduce the time people spend going through immigration, ensuring their smooth passage through the airport.”

HID Global Launches Bring-Your-Own-Device Government Solution for Securing Sensitive Data on iPhones and iPads

HID Global®, a worldwide leader in secure identity solutions, today announced a solution for government agencies interested in securing Apple® iOSTM devices with access to sensitive data. The solution combines the recently announced ActivClient® Mobile Software Development Kit (SDK) for iOS ™ with two sleeves from Precise Biometrics: the Tactivo™ iPhone® sleeve and the Tactivo™ iPad® sleeve. This solution enables government agencies of all kinds to use their Common Access Card (CAC) or Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards to secure communications and access to sensitive information by encrypting it through standard Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption methods.

“The massive popularity of iOS devices has completely changed the way organizations of all types, including government, approach how these devices access information,” said Thomas Marschall, Precise Biometrics President & CEO. “Our solution with HID Global takes a pragmatic approach to the problem, ensuring that the CAC and PIV cards already in use can now secure the mobile devices government employees are already using.”

For government agencies interested in deploying a more integrated solution, HID Global offers a solution leveraging “derived credentials”, a concept recently introduced in the FIPS 201-2 PIV standard, which is currently in draft form. The integrated approach taken by HID Global applies the “derived credential” to a secure microSD card, a secure element with the same cryptographic services as the CAC or PIV smart card. This microSD format can be connected to iPhones with a sleeve. This approach brings both significantly increased convenience and security to the iPhone BYOD scenarios.
