New Client Extends Reach of FPC’s Mobile Biometrics in Africa

August 25, 2020

“FPC’s fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side of the device.”

Fingerprint Cards has a new client in the smartphone sector, announcing that its FPC1540 fingerprint sensor is supporting biometric authentication in a new Infinix smartphone.

New Client Extends Reach of FPC's Mobile Biometrics in Africa

The device in question is the Infinix Note 7 Lite, which was first unveiled in an online-only media event in mid-May. FPC’s fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side of the device.

The Infinix brand is owned by Transsion, a Shenzhen-based mobile phone maker with a strong focus on the African and South Asian markets. The Infinix Note 7 marks the first time that Transsion has used a fingerprint sensor from Fingerprint Cards.

In announcing the integration, FPC noted that its new client has been “particularly successful in Africa, and was among the top 10 smartphone players globally in Q2 this year.”

Commenting on the development, Fingerprint Cards mobile business head Ted Hansson gestured to the broadening reach of mobile biometrics. “The penetration of fingerprint sensors continues to increase,” he said. “We are pleased to bring simple and secure authentication into the hands of more consumers and enhance their user experience.”

News of the integration arrives shortly after a Q2 report in which Fingerprint Cards reported ongoing demand for fingerprint sensors from the mobile sector, impeded by serious production capacity disruption in the mobile sector, particularly with respect to semiconductor manufacturers.

While FPC has made efforts to expand into new application areas in recent years, mobile integrations remain a core component of its business operations. That being the case, the Transsion partnership marks another important development as Fingerprint Cards navigates through the choppy waters of the pandemic.
