MorphoTrust USA (Safran) has achieved SAFETY Act certification for two of its flagship solutions – its Universal Enrollment Services (UES) and Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) platforms.
SAFETY Act certification is issued by the Department of Homeland Security. The program’s aim is essentially to promote the development of anti-terrorism technologies and services by offering legal liability protections to qualifying solutions.
MorphoTrust’s UES and ABIS platforms certainly have applications in this area. UES offers biometric and biographic authentication services for various governmental enrollment programs including TSA PreCheck, the major US pre-screening system for air travel. Meanwhile, the ABIS platform offers biometric identification and matching via multiple modalities including facial, iris, and fingerprint scanning, and is used by multiple government agencies in deployments related to anti-terrorism efforts.
Now, with SAFETY Act certification, the two solutions have considerable protections against legal challenges arising from their deployments, entitling MorphoTrust such benefits as DHS backing in federal courts and protection against joint liability for non-economic damages. The DHS says SAFETY Act certification typically lasts for about five years.
