In law enforcement it is absolutely imperative that the good guys stay as many steps ahead of the bad guys as possible when it comes to the friction provided by society and the security systems in place. This need is amplified on an international scale, where any extraneous difficulty at borders can put valuable hours between the authorities and their fleeing outlaw. This is why INTERPOL introduced its Travel Document initiative: to allow for agents in possession of the credentials to be deployed as quickly as possible in countries requiring aid with not only investigations, but also natural disasters, crisis situations or major international events.
The INTERPOL Travel Document Initiative requires the creation and management of highly secure travel documents that take the form of e-Passport Booklets and e-Identification Cards. The idea is to allow member countries to immediately identify and and provide specially derived visa facilitations for the holders of said documents.
To aid in this international law enforcement initiative, Morpho (Safran) and Datacard Group have entered a partnership to provide both the documents and the means by which to manage them. Announced on Tuesday, the newly minted team up will see Morpho providing the management and document production solutions for the international policing agency, tools that INTERPOL will use to administer the e-Passports and ID cards. Datacard Group, meanwhile, will be providing the 3D laser engraving technology that is required to create the credentials to highly demanding security specifications.
Morpho was initially chosen to provide these services to INTERPOL in 2012, and in 2013 the company entered into a five year strategic partnership with the law enforcers to facilitate collaboration on matters of border security. Now that Datacard Group is part of the equation, INTERPOL will be assured by the secure issuance that the company’s 3D laser engraving technology will provide in the document creating process.
