Kenya’s GTBank has implemented fingerprint based login on its mobile banking app. The biometric authentication capability comes by way of the Touch ID fingerprint scanning system on Apple’s newest mobile devices.
In a statement announcing the move, the bank framed it as a means of improving both user convenience and security, noting that customers are increasingly interested in banking on their mobile devices. Guaranty Trust Bank Kenya Managing Director Ibukun Odegbaike said the use of mobile biometrics “gives our customers the control and confidence to transact securely on the platform.”
Evidently, the bank’s management is feeling more secure, as well, given that with the implementation of Touch ID login, GTBank has also enabled card management for users on the iOS app. Customers can now pay balances, stop card payments, and more.
In taking advantage of mobile biometrics in this way, GTBank joins the many other banks that have implemented Touch ID login for their mobile apps so far, and also helps to further the mobile biometrics boom underway in financial services more broadly.
