IriTech has teamed up with barcode technology specialist HD Barcode LLC to offer a new identity solution based on ID cards with embedded iris biometrics data.
It’s called HD IrisCheck. A given user’s iris biometrics are embedded into a special barcode on a normal ID card. The card can then be scanned using an iris-scanning smartphone, or by connecting IriTech’s IriShield USB iris camera to a smartphone, and scanning the barcode. The company says the system has particular advantages in being able to operate without the need for a user database or even a network connection.
The solution arrives at a time of growing interest in biometric ID, with numerous major companies now intensively seeking to pioneer smart cards with embedded fingerprint readers. In taking a different tack with iris biometrics, the HD IrisCheck solution might be able to play off of growing excitement over mobile iris scanning thanks to Samsung’s new focus on such devices, especially if many other OEMs follow suit.
IriTech says it will showcase the new solution at MWC Shanghai 2017, which runs from June 28th to July 1st.
