Fujitsu is showing off a range of retail and point-of-sale solutions at the upcoming National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show exposition in New York City, and its offerings include some advanced biometric technology.
The solutions range from self-checkout technology to predictive analytics software, but the biometric aspect comes in the form of the company’s vascular palm-scanning technology. The company is demonstrating its PalmEntry and PalmSecure systems, both of which have practical access control applications in a retail environment. Touting the security of these systems, Fujitsu notes that because the technology’s vascular readings require active blood flow in the user, forgery is effectively impossible.
Fujitsu has been pretty active in the area of biometrics lately, having last year secured a deal that would see its technology installed in airports for employee access control. It also has been investing heavily in research and development for other, more novel biometrics applications, such as palm-reading technology that would be installed in vehicles’ steering wheels to detect when drivers are feeling asleep.
