Google’s latest Nexus smartphones – the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, manufactured by LG and Huawei respectively – have been announced, each featuring the OneTouch FPC1025 fingerprint sensor from Fingerprint Cards AB. The sensors have been integrated into the smartphones’ Nexus Imprint feature, which is Google’s flagship handset biometric security introduced with the new devices.
The announcement fits into the trend we saw begin in the summer, of Fingerprint Cards frequently announcing new smartphones featuring its biometric sensors. Google Nexus is a major mainstream smartphone brand and this news comes along with other biometrics-centered firsts. Both new handsets are the first to ship with the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow, otherwise known as Android M, which has built-in fingerprint sensor support developed in collaboration with FPC. The new devices also support the Android Pay mobile wallet, which authenticates point-of-sale payments via fingerprint authentication.
“Google powers a majority of the world’s smartphones with its Android operating system and these new Google Nexus devices are the first smartphones to integrate Android 6.0 and its integrated support for fingerprint sensors,” says Jörgen Lantto, CEO of FPC. “We are proud to have collaborated with Google, LG and Huawei to enable the integration of fingerprint sensors in Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. FPC1025 supports 360 degree finger rotation capability, fast response time and industry leading 3D image quality.”
FPC’s sensor is housed on the reverse side of the new Google smartphones and performs secure matching procedures in under 600 milliseconds. Matching, as has come to be expected in these smartphone integrations, is performed on-device in an isolated environment on the phone, according to The Verge. This protects biometric data from the kind of exploits to which other, older smartphones, like the HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy S5, have been said to be vulnerable.
Fingerprint Cards, in a press release announcing the integration, stated that the FPC1025 sales associated with this news are included in the company’s 2015 revenue guidance of 2.500 MSEK for the year.
