There are few things in the modern world more derided than the process of crossing a border into or returning from a foreign country. The process is thorough, and even though it does its best job possible in keeping terrorism, international crime and illegal immigration at bay, those of us who have no ill intentions or criminal records and just want to go somewhere feel a little put off by the process. After all, who really wants to take off their shoes in a crowded public area?
Luckily, border control is at the top of the list when it comes to applications that can be made both easier on the public and more secure for the nations welcoming them. Technology like ePassports and eGates work together in expediting the process of identifying people in transit, and in border control nothing quite seems to be making an impact like facial recognition.
To this extent, Cognitec Systems is responding to the high demand for face recognizing biometric solutions in border control with its FaceVACS-Entry offering. The system, which has been optimized for easy customer use while providing real-time liveness detection in order to prevent image spoofing, is now ready for integration into eGate deployments.
Advanced anti-spoofing is critical in discussions of border control. Face recognition has a number of benefits when it comes to eGate systems, specifically contactless authentication and convenient matching speed. There also are general worries associated with face-based biometrics, namely that they can be tricked into providing a false positive when presented with a photo or video. Thankfully, Cognitec’s solution addresses worries of fraudulent access.
FaceVACS-Entry sports a proprietary sensor that detects presentation attacks during the verification process. The accuracy this offers has ensured that the new system adheres to the guidelines set forth by the European Border Police (Frontex).
Earlier this year, Cognitec was awarded a contract by the German Border Police to supply eGates to all major German airports as part of the EasyPASS project. Every gate supplied as part of the agreement will be outfitted with FaceVACS-Entry.
