Can This Biometric System 'Cure' Drowsy Driving?

Hyundai Mobis has announced a new biometric system for smart cars that could save lives.

It revolves around an infrared camera that can be installed unobtrusively within the vehicle. The camera system is designed to scan the driver’s facial and eye movements for signs of drowsiness; at the same time, its AI system can also monitor any signs of erratic driving, such as zigzagging between lanes. If the system determines that the driver is falling asleep, it can transition the smart car to autonomous control and find a safe place to pull over.

In a statement announcing the solution, Hyundai Mobis cited AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety data in asserting that more than 20 percent of traffic fatalities per year in the US are the result of drowsy driving. Hyunadi Mobis North America autonomous vehicle development director David Agnew explained that with respect to the company’s Departed Driver Rescue & Exit Maneuver technology, “Our research approach has been clinical; we are essentially working on a ‘cure’ for drowsy driving injuries and fatalities.”

Hyundai Mobis plans to showcase the technology at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show, where it will also show off other cutting-edge automotive technologies for the smart car such as a pop-up steering wheel and rotating seats. CES 2018 will run from January 9th to 12th in Las Vegas.
