A newly published patent application indicates that Microsoft is exploring iris recognition technology, reports Patently Mobile.
The patent outlines an iris recognition method based on multiple images of a subject’s eye from different angles. Certain biometric characteristics would be identified and compared across the images; and given that the eye is a three-dimensional object with transparent components, by comparing the images the system would be able to determine whether it’s a real eye or an image of one, allowing for liveness detection.
As Patently Mobile reports, the patent application details a smartphone deployment, but it also notes that the system could be implemented in a range of other applications, including “Xbox, HoloLens, [and] Surface Books” implementations.
Of course, whether any of these applications will be realized is another question, with Microsoft having applied for the patent back in Q4 of 2015. Still, with Samsung’s new flagship smartphones expected to pioneer iris scanning on mobile devices, Microsoft is likely increasingly interested in getting this technology into its own consumer devices soon.
