NEXT Biometrics has announced that it has received an order for 100,000 fingerprint sensors for deployment in the smart home market. The company says that the order comes from “a leading design and manufacturing company” in the smart home sector, and that it will start shipping the sensors in July.
It’s another major benefit the company is enjoying from its major production capacity upgrade last year, which allowed it to produce advanced fingerprint sensors at a low cost. That has allowed NEXT to produce inexpensive products and target previously untapped market sectors. In announcing this new order, NEXT CEO Tore Etholm-Idsøe explained that “it further highlights the potential volumes in these ‘NEXT-enabled’ markets, where our high quality and low cost sensor enables the market itself.”
Indeed, and coming as it does from the smart home and Internet of Things sector, the order could signal a potentially huge market opening up for NEXT and other low-cost sensor producers. Experts tend to see biometrics as essential to IoT security, and it’s easy to imagine a growing number of small, everyday appliances and other items in the home that will soon be in need of inexpensive fingerprint sensors. Tore Etholm-Idsøe is certainly optimistic; he asserts that given “the fundamentals, technology and market-wise, NEXT Biometrics now has access to a larger combined market than any other player in our industry.”
