NEC Corporation of America has launched a new multimodal biometric scanning device aimed at law enforcement and the civil sector. Called SmartScan, it’s a live scan kiosk with a strong emphasis on design and ease of use.
The kiosk is height adjustable, and NEC says it uses an ergonomic design. As for its software, it’s based on Microsoft Windows 10, so its screen interface allows for the kind of touch-based interaction with which so many users are familiar today.
In a statement announcing the new offering, NEC Biometrics Solutions Division SVP Raffie Beroukhim explains that SmartScan is the product of paying close attention to client feedback, asserting, “we listened to our customers and developed a solution like no other addressing their user-friendliness, security and long-term support requirements.”
The kiosk, which features fingerprint and palmprint scanning, should help NEC to further endear itself to the law enforcement and security market, where biometric identification technology is increasingly in demand. The company is one of the leading biometrics companies in that market, with its Australian division having just won a major contract to provide facial recognition technology to South Australia Police.
