Taiwan-based Egistec has announced that it will provide fingerprint sensors for the forthcoming Philips Aurora i966 smartphone. The smartphone is a collaboration between Philips and the Chinese corporate giant Alibaba.
Egistec will provide the companies with its ET300, a small, high-performance fingerprint sensor. Egistec says its ET300 “has one of the fastest enrollment and authentication processes available” in the current market, and can read fingerprints in wet and dry conditions, and on a 360-degree rotation.
It’s an interesting development. Chinese authorities have recently relaxed some market regulations, essentially allowing Alibaba to commence mobile commerce on its digital platform Alipay, and its partnership with Philips to develop a smartphone is likely for this primary purpose – which would explain the company’s interest in getting a high-performance fingerprint sensor into the phone, just as Apple has done with its mobile devices with respect to its Apple Pay m-commerce platform.
