Citibank customers in Hong Kong can now log into their mobile banking apps via the iPhone’s Touch ID fingerprint scanning system.
A number of banks around the world have embraced Touch ID for mobile login, but Citibank has become the first to use such biometric authentication to enable mobile stock trading. Customers can also perform actions like transfer money and pay bills through the app.
While Citi’s embrace of Touch ID comes a bit late compared to many other banks, the financial institution is no stranger to biometrics and has been close to the cutting edge in its embrace of voice authentication for its call-in lines. It has launched such systems in Malaysia and the Philippines, and says it’s aiming to be the first bank to roll out voice authentication across the APAC region.
In a statement announcing the Touch ID mobile app login, the bank called it “the latest addition to Citi’s biometrics authentication offering,” with Citibank Global Consumer Banking Country Business Manager Angel Ng emphasizing the organization’s “commitment to innovation”.
