Today, facial recognition technology developer Animetrics announced its first move into the commercial sector with the release of its new FaceR application programming interface (API).
The new API is available through the company website and Mashape.com. FaceR is Animetrics’ first API for commercial licensing and is intended to give software developers the tools to easily integrate facial recognition into their products.
Animetrics proposes a great number of commercial and government uses for its specific brand of patented facial recognition technology. FaceR features 2D to 3D pose correction, which allows for images submitted at obscure angles to be normalized as a frontal image for optimal matching. This allows for improved matching performance in existing face recognition systems, facial enrollment into galleries, face recognition capability and gallery management.
“Our goal is to extend the reach of our facial recognition capability beyond our core markets, enabling partners to leverage our assets to build innovative products while at the same time making our core technology more pervasive in the marketplace,” says Paul Schuepp, president and CEO of Animetrics. “There is an unmet need in the marketplace for accurate, powerful face recognition APIs. We will give developers access to our facial biometric technology to drive development of creative applications worldwide.”
Practical applications are wide spread. Kairos, an API provider uses the technology for time tracking, while Amintrics proposes that the facial recognition tech could be applied in online shopping for eyewear, allowing end-users looking for glasses frames to find the right fit through the use of a webcam.
FaceR is available through a cloud service. This biometric spin on the software-as-a-service model is taking off as providers of this sort of enabling technology fight for widespread adoption, making scalable business models that can be constantly updated.
Animetrics assures its customers in the verticals that it serves, including law enforcement and the military, that this commercial BaaS business will be run in parallel as it continues to provide finished applications for those markets.
