Utah’s Driver License Division (DLD) has begun to issue new driver licenses produced by MorphoTrust USA.
As of yesterday, Utah residents renewing or applying for a driver license will receive the new identity documents, which feature an updated design and encoded elements that will help to ensure the driver licenses are secure against identity fraud. It’s the result of a five-year contract between the DLD and MorphoTrust.
Commenting in a statement, Utah DLD Director Christopher Caras highlighted the “sophisticated features” of the new cards, asserting that “[t]he safety and security of Utah citizens is of utmost importance to us.”
MorphoTrust’s emphasis on security extends to its production process, with the company recently having been recognized with a government honor for, among other things, its high level of standards certification; the company recently became the first driver license producer in the world to have both ISO and NASPO certification for its production facilities. Meanwhile, MorphoTrust is also investigating more experimental driver license projects, with a pilot project in Iowa trialling smartphone-based digital driver licenses.
