In physical access control, accessibility is king. The old generation security is being left behind in favor of solutions that offer greater assurance through stronger authentication, but there are adoption barriers facing businesses of all sizes looking to make the upgrade.
Today, Suprema, Inc. – a global biometrics and security solutions company based in Seoul – announced the launch of its newest IP access control multi-smartcard reader and controller, aimed at providing the flexibility that can overcome said barriers. Named Xpass S2, the device builds on its predecessor, the Xpass Slim, with enhanced RF performance and support for a wider range of card technology standards. Xpass S2 supports MiFare, DESFire, ISO14443A/B, ISO15693, FeliCa and NFC.
The wider range of support equates to greater accessibility on behalf of the business that chooses Suprema’s new system. Added on to that range of card compatibility is the fact that the Xpass S2 is designed for a flexible range of deployments. For indoor use, the IP access control device is made to be aesthetically pleasing: slim (11.4 mm profile), small (80mm by 120mm) and bright (it sports a multi-color LED indicator).
For outdoor use, Suprema’s new device boasts an IP65 ingress protection rating and an adaptive heater. According to the company, the Xpass S2 can operate in temperatures ranging from as low as -35℃ up to 65℃.
Young S. Moon, Suprema’s vice president, comments on the new release: “The Xpass S2 is the latest addition to our growing access control lineup and provides extra flexibility for our customers in designing their access control systems with or without biometric solutions.”
This summer at FindBiometrics, Suprema has been in the news for a deployment, a software development kit (SDK) launch and a certification. In June the company announced that it would be providing the BioMini Slim to be used in an Android-based biometric verification system in Pakistan. Later that month Suprema received product certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Finally, in July Suprema launched a fingerprint recognition SDK for the Android operating system.
